Synopsis

Gauri is an unpretentious story of a woman who handles the hurdles of life with courage and profound thinking. Her character is similar to that of many women we see in our lives. But what is different is the dramatic twist in the tale, which you won’t see coming.

The protagonist Gauri is patient and persistent, with an undying love and affection for her husband, much like many women in the country. Indeed, Gauri’s story is the tale of many women in India, who sacrifice their needs, desires and dreams for the sake of people dear to them.

This work of fiction is a tribute to every unsung woman in every household. A big salute to these strong women, without whom society will perish.

My Thoughts

The book,  Gauri..!!: One Woman. One Story. A Million Lives is much like its title – a couple of events on the same canvas, each adding some value to the canvas it helped weave and in the end, giving a texture that is fine and coarse, in parts.

The story is mostly warm and simple; and in turn, trigger slivers of thought as author broaches the issues of pressure of society over women, conservatism, exploitation and discrimination.

One is likely to learn something new, and at the same time, frown at author's firm assumptions, especially in relation to long-standing traditions and religious tenets. The writing aids the reading and the unvarnished prose tempted me to finish this book in one go. A good read, with plenty to chew on and some humour to ease the tension.

The language is super easy and the narration is smooth making you finish this book in two to three sitting.
