Synopsis
Zimera is an ancestral spirit who has been dispatched to rescue a loved one in desperate need. Cyril Parks is a very successful stand-up comedian who has made millions laugh but he is chronically depressed and nurses a very dark secret. Cyril was raised by his Jamaican aunt, (Aunt Felecie) who has taught him that a man is not supposed to cry. Unfortunately, this teaches Cyril a type of toxic masculinity and only serves to further complicate his understanding of emotions and the catharcism that they bring. Also, he needs help to recover from childhood traumas and other life issues which seek to overwhelm him but he lacks the language of emotional vulnerability to discuss these issues; therefore, he suffers in silence. The good thing is that he has a lifelong friend, Austin Blane, who has experienced similar traumas and who becomes his primary support system. These traumas have yoked these two together for life or is it just the shared traumas which unite them? When Cyril loses a loved one and meets a strange woman, events unfold that will change the trajectory of their lives forever. Things will never ever be the same between them.
My Thoughts
I've never read anything quite like this before - the telling of a life in such a unique way. The writing is lovely , the way it is told. I don't know what I can say to do justice to what Kareen has accomplished here.
An honest and moving fiction by Kareen. She narrates the sweetness and also the tough situations of her characters life, growing up during a unique time in Jamaica.
Gorgeous writing. Powerful images and so much heart that I am left breathless upon completion! I cannot wait to have her in my personal library this year. What a day that will be!
