Synopsis
Cocktail is a compilation of four inspiring stories where the protagonists are dynamic, courageous, and freethinkers. The purpose of this book is to make the readers travel through a journey of self-realization. The main characters of these stories pursue unconventional career goals. Their conviction, individuality, and vision have made them legendary in their own rights. Their predicaments have been depicted through their stories – discomfort in their work lives, turmoil in their personal relationships, struggles of building educational and vocational setups in their villages.This book aspires to motivate us to think beyond “peer pressure” and live a life of our own choices. How these characters guide their lives through obstacles and societal stigmas will be an endorsement of their never say die attitude.Cocktail occupies a special place in my heart. My Thoughts
The sum of the collection is greater than its individual parts, however, so that even the shorter character sketches add something to the reader’s understanding of their character and individuality. Despite the wide range of class and circumstance Antara addresses, each one has a sense of total authenticity, of a deep understanding of how this society intermixes.
The prose is somewhat understated, with Antara relying more on the penetrating examination of characters and their emotional state rather than any flamboyancy of language or stylistic quirks, and that works well for me. She achieves a depth of characterisation with few words, acknowledging his reader’s ability to interpret and understand without the need to have everything spelled out.
In the stories where she is addressing more fundamental aspects of human nature, I appreciated her rather sparing style greatly.
Overall, I found the fully developed stories excellent, while the ones that are primarily character sketches are interesting if not wholly satisfying. However, as a collection, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing, the weaker parts being more than compensated for by the stronger.
