My Thoughts
Ashley Perrotti's book so accurately- and achingly- captures what this pandemic has felt like. Her text is simple and straightforward enough for my 4 year old son to relate to, but the illustrations are next level and gave me all the feels. Extraordinary. It perfectly captures the myriad emotions in this new reality, but still ends on a note of hope. During a Pandemic by Ashley Perrotti is for both children and adults. You will get from it what you need to get from it.... it's drawn and written with such care. So I'm not afraid for my 4 year old to read it because even though it's about COVID 19 and there's some big big stuff in there that is very meaningful to me, it's not explicit so he only understands at the level he is at. That being said, lots of good talking points. And it's all so true.
The words in the book are so simple yet powerful. It made me tear up just flipping through the first couple of pages. Along with the illustrations, the words closely capture different aspects of 2020. It was dark and gray but full of warmth. It resonates with young and old. I thought it was for children and for many children it is totally worthwhile to help explain about Covid-19. The book is gracefully and beautifully, simply written. The pictures are tender and help to explain a difficult time. I bought the book for my son, but will have to buy more copies as I am keeping this one for myself. It is a lovely book for adults also or maybe especially so. Can't recommend highly enough, especially for young kids.
The stylized, comical creatures belie the depth of the message that comes through for even the youngest of readers: We are all in this together, and our differences strengthen our unity. This sweet book can be enjoyed by children in a group setting or when shared one-on-one with someone special.
Highly Recommended!
