Synopsis
This is a story about Cody, a little caterpillar born in the midst of a terrible thunderstorm. With all the other animals hidden away from the rain, Cody is left feeling sad and alone, and wondering if this is how he will feel every day. But then one afternoon, everything changes. Cody becomes a butterfly, the sun starts to shine, and all the animals come out to say hello! Cody finally feels what it's like to be happy. Until the storm comes back again! Now, Cody faces a new challenge. Can he find a way to be happy even in the rain, or will the storm get the best of him again?

Beautifully portrayed story full of hope , challenges and opportunities . . . sure to touch a tender spot. . . . The situation should resonate with young people who are sure to recognize themselves in Cody. Lovely illustrations perfectly complement this simple yet strong story. Ori Gutin’s affecting story, with its open ending, focuses on the withholding of emotions and life challenges rather than outright story, and Winny reflects the pensive mood in sober illustration . . . in subtly detailed portraits. . . . A good conversation starter.
Story unfolds with harsh beauty , humanly emotions ,hope and the ominousness of opportunities lost. . . . The matter-of-fact tone of Gutin's narration paired against the illustrations' visual isolation of Winny creates its own tension. Masterful use of light guiding readers' emotional responses.
One of the best kids' books about overcoming adversity and happiness I have ever come across. Not sappy or saccharine in the least. I use it as a read-aloud for 2-6th grade, and every time the students are just silent. Watching their faces while reading the story is heart-wrenching. They want a happy ending and this book doesn't tie up a pink package with a big bow, because neither does real life. But something really good happens at the end.
It is a compelling story for those wanting to help kids think about the meaning of happiness , relationships and emotions of people around them and to try and foster kindness towards others and an amazing lesson that everything is not sunshine and rainbows all the time . The writing is excellent and the illustrations are beautiful.
