Synopsis
The world is a wasteland. It always has been. Moshe, Amaru, and Reenu have never known anything other than the desert that raised them. When the rumor arises that something other than barren landscape could be out there, the three of them make haste for an abundant future. Upon arrival at this established society, the group quickly learns how and how not to get along amidst group dynamics and seemingly sinister mystery. My Thoughts
Dystopian fiction offers a vision of the future. Dystopias are societies in cataclysmic decline, with characters who battle environmental ruin, technological control, and government oppression. Dystopian novels can challenge readers to think differently about current social and political climates, and in some instances can even inspire action. I must say Ecclesia's Table by Mason S. Haynie is a gem of dystopian literature. This book will fascinate its readers because it draws on aspects of our own world. Mirroring elements of society, the environment, religion, politics and region , book is flushed with fantasy and adventure world that, though eerily familiar, is much more frightening than our own. There is an urgency to each page, and a raw emotional pull . . . making [Ecclesia's Table] easily one of the most harrowing books you'll ever encounter. . . . Once opened, it is nearly impossible to put down; it is as if you must keep reading in order for the characters to stay alive. . . . Ecclesia's Table is a deeply imagined work and harrowing no matter whatever you are into. The writing is fantastic, for starter. The style, with short and descriptive sentences, carries the story to perfection. It also has a poetic quality that softens what is said/described and gives it another dimension.
Ecclesia's Table is beautiful, thought provoking, compelling and life affirming. Throughout the novel Moshe, Reena and Amaro learn many lessons in life including the truth behind where they are now living. All three of them make haste for an abundant future. I hesitate to say it was a pleasure to read given the tone and subject matter but I recommend this book to anyone who is prepared to engage their brain and open their heart. Mason S. Haynie's writing emotionally tied me to the characters. The reader is placed in a situation where he begins to think about what he would do in that situation. It is definitely a book to make you feel and think.
I could barely put this book down. It's not long, but it's the right length. Because the experience is an oppressive one. Part of you wants to stop reading and part of you hangs onto a glimmer of hope. I'm late to the party, but I'm right on time.
