It’s hard enough for adults to wrap their heads around the COVID-19 pandemic, so needless to say, kids face even more challenges. While parents can explain the coronavirus situation to their children in age-appropriate ways, there are also resources to guide them through these conversations. One major one is children’s books like The Day The Zoo Went Quiet written in response to the pandemic. With whimsical illustrations and relatable prose, The Day The Zoo Went Quiet helps young children navigate all of their great big feelings and cheer themselves on during the upheaval of pandemic through the mind of their favourite animals.
The Day The Zoo Went Quiet by Glen Doyle and Mony Doyle , I bought this book to read with my 2 nephews all under the age of 6.
The book is charming, on a child’s level of understanding, and it ended up being read out loud by my 6 year old. Based on animals , pandemic and Covid-19, this story
reinforces , understanding Covid-19 and taking safety measures of Covid 19 with pages on wearing a mask, keeping your distance... yet being helpful ,respectful, appreciative , and that you are safe, and loved. Everyone is at home to help each other and you at home to help them. valuable lessons short, well said, nicely illustrated, not too long.

Overall, I love how the authors explore all of this through the eyes of a animals. We’ve all been feeling the things expressed in this book, however told from the viewpoint of animals in the zoo, it makes it relevant for children. To know they are not alone in their situation, I believe, will go a long way in helping ease the anxiety of children who may still be on lockdown or as they adjust to a new normal. The Day the Zoo Went Quiet is an important story that can create conversations and begin to discuss their own adventures over the last several months.
I absolutely loved reading this book. The illustrations are adorable and it's the perfect book for children to read during this time.
