Synopsis
If you ever meet an individual from the LGBTQ+ community asking for work, how would you react? Many will look away. This is the story of someone fighting against society's many stereotypes. Most are confused with language itself, unsure whether to say 'him' or 'her'! Will this journey lead the protagonist, Sane, somewhere or he will break halfway?
My Thoughts
Today, homosexuality and queer identities may be acceptable to more youths than ever before, but within the boundaries of family, home and school, acceptance of their sexuality and freedom to openly express their gender choices still remain a constant struggle for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people. We need to understand that during Pride month every June, a lot of attention turns to LGBTQ culture, including its artists, creators and authors. For 30 days, every product from T-shirts to bagels come in a rainbow motif to trumpet the LGBTQ community. But increased visibility during Pride month shouldn't serve as an annual check-in — it's a starting point to expand our media consumption all year long.
Identity: A Mere Play of Gender, Status & Aesthetics by Arundhati Sahoo is the story of a women, a prostitute , a eunuch , someone who is fighting against society's many stereotypes. This book is incredibly engaging. I love each chapter of this book. Author made it incredibly easy to read, and the dialogue is superb. The chapters and all the characters feel very real. Arundhati Sahoo's writing made me feel like I was really there in those places. I am so grateful to this new crop of authors who are willing to write on important topics and characters as complex, sometimes flawed, sometimes toxic human beings. I will for sure be recommending this one to my friends.
I’m starved for these types of books, so I couldn’t do any less than 5 stars here. To sum it up, this book is simply fantastic! It’s an emotional journey, where you start up in the clouds and by the time you crash, you look back and feel overwhelmed and emotional, which was very rewarding.
