Synopsis
This gripping thriller is set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and chronicles the dramatic events when a former detective, Joseph Carter, sets out to gain redemption from the consequences of an old case that cost him everything. Carter is still haunted by the murders of his niece and brother-in-law at the hands of a serial killer he was trying to track down. One year on, the killer has returned and Carter, now a disgraced detective gone private, launches a personal vendetta to catch him this time around.
My Thoughts
From classic fairytales like Bluebeard to more modern horrors like Hannibal Lecter, murderous monsters of the more human variety have long held a firm grip on readers’ imaginations. Perhaps it’s the escapist thrill of seeing a terrifying killer outsmarted—a macabre fascination with the deepest recesses of our collective imagination. Or, it could simply be the love of a good thriller. Whatever the case, serial killers and the novels about them very often make for terrifyingly enjoyable reads. Where Crows Land by Paul McCracken is one of those gems of crime thriller flushed with twist and turns. Spine-chilling and disturbing. . . . Deft plotting, strong characterization, adrenaline-fuelled action sequences and a whole raft of social issues raised along the way make this book a spectacularly good example of how a tried and tested (and often tired) formula can be made exhilarating and fresh. At one point, I actually said, "Well played," aloud, because I was completely duped by a plot twist. I couldn't read these action scenes fast enough. I loved the philosophical comparisons between killer and detective behavior. This gem stands alone, on its own two brilliant and original feet just fine.
This is a brilliantly written book. Not only is the setting perfect for the plot but the characters are ones you want to root for. The book at some point, becomes compelling and obsessive to the reader, once the overriding plot and characters are fully developed. The book presents many twists and turns and great suspensions and unexpected surprises.
I purchased this book through Amazon and and give it five stars out of five because of the compelling story and numerous surprises. I unhesitatingly recommend this book to all those who are fascinated by the workings of the criminal mind bent on killing to achieve their goals.
Highly Recommended!
