The Adventure Academy superheroes include Arron, an Autistic child who is also a Numerical Genius, David, a wheelchair-ridden boy who, to the naked eye, appears to move slower than others but holds the power of super speed! Michelle, although mute, her supersonic hearing allows her to hear anything coming her way minutes before its arrival, and Sasha, who is deaf, yet creates sound waves to move people and objects!
Autumn Lee takes control and gathers the children in a secret meeting in her basement to confirm her suspicions and create a team of superheroes. Find out how they use their powers to bring justice, peace, and love to any trouble that may come their way.
My Thoughts
It’s a great book for helping to teach kids about autism! I read it to my son’s first grade class with his teacher’s approval, and the kids all enjoyed it and listened well. We used parts of the story to talk about how everyone is different, everyone has some superpowers and then discussed how we can all try to include others even when their differences can be difficult to understand! My first grader has autism and is in a general education classroom, but none of the kids really know him yet, so this book was a great way to start teaching kids about autism awareness and being inclusive and not exclusive. My son’s teacher borrowed it to share with the other teachers too! Such a cute , powerful and well written book. I appreciate this book and will be using it as a resource over and over.
This book was perfect, helped them see that we are not the only family with the issues we face, and they could identify with the characters. This book is beautiful for Autism families to gift to their child's classroom, or a very observant four year old neighbor who notices our son is amazing and he too may have an unknown superpower that only someone like them can have. I must say it's a wonderful book to share with the child and their piers. It's OK to be different. It's also a great idea to keep it on hand to share with the students in each new class, each year.
What's it like to have a friend with Autism? A wonderful book that helps children understand Autism and it helps the Autistic child learn about themself.
I would recommend this book for any children books lover and those people who have Autism will also touch their hearts to know what friendship and humanity is all about. This is an excellent book to read and I would recommend it!
