Synopsis
Destination North Pole is endearing, humorous, dangerous and sometimes quirky travelogue.
An old guy on an old bicycle supported by a sag-wagon (his loving wife) ventures north. She traveled ahead to find nightly food and lodging as he peddled an average of 121 kilometers (75 miles) per-day for forty days searching for iconic North Pole.
Nature awakened history and imagination of the senior pensioners. A love emerged from the flat Dakota Plains, Canada’s Prairie Provinces, British Columbia into the vast Yukon and Alaska through eight mountain ranges with pristine streams and hot springs over massive glaciated rivers and permafrost.
Wildlife? Dangers? Risks? Constantly!
Hundreds of black bears and grizzlies blocked deer, elk, moose, wood bison, wolves, bicyclists, and other critters from lush road-sides. Elements (rain, wind, flurries and chilly mornings) heighten the desire for sun, wildflowers, rippling streams, glaciated mountains, hot baths and soft beds. A couple’s love and a path through nature opened opportunities for others on this 5,000 kilometers (3,000 mile) adventure—Destination North Pole.
My Thoughts
Destination North Pole: 5,000 Km by Bicycle is An extraordinary story in which Gary Wietgrefe seamlessly weaves together science, a real love of nature and the adventure and hazards of biking (3,000 mile) adventure—Destination North Pole, Hundreds of black bears and grizzlies blocked deer, elk, moose, wood bison, wolves, bicyclists, and other critters from lush road-sides, (rain, wind, flurries and chilly mornings) heighten the desire for sun, wildflowers, rippling streams, glaciated mountains, hot baths and soft beds. Couple share an epic journey and encounter hardships, but they do not give up. The book is a lament for our thoughtless destruction of nature and at the same time a celebration of the beauty that remains. Told with a writer’s eye for detail and a nature's lover , his sensitivity to the fragile nature of the systems that support wildlife and humans . . . a keen observer of the nature condition, Gary Wietgrefe draws attention to some of the patterns in our nature that are in conflict with the greater good. His narrative is an adventurous wake-up call for the need to stay connected to nature.
After decades of pursuing the pleasures of cycling, I’m convinced that riding with an intent, an objective of some sort, adds meaning and value. This conviction is clearly shared by Gary Wietgrefe, a serious cyclist and inquiring beauty of nature as well. And it’s clearly in evidence in the story of there engrossing cycling adventure, which he shares in Destination North Pole: 5,000 Km by Bicycle .
What a wonderful idea for an adventure! Absolutely inspired, timely, and important.
Highly Recommended!
