Synopsis
In a parallel universe, the year is 2063 on an alternate earth. The world’s population was expected to reach 12.8 billion that prosperous year. Nearly one third of the booming population was projected to live on desert lands, which became rich with precipitation, vegetation, and animal life. The AI technology was expected to improve and reach greater heights; the common solar roof panels would be sustaining energy, the rainwater cleansing system would have ended the water shortage, and natural disasters would have no longer existed, but not that year. The world’s population is almost half its projection, the sun is smothered by the murky sky, more lands are inhabitable, and smart-commercial buildings were nearly destroyed by a self-destruct virus that turned all working computers into explosives. Instead, the AI technology is used to rebuild major cities still suffering from the vestiges of nuclear attacks, the centralized governments are using political propaganda to secretly control the population hoping to stop history from repeating itself, and science’s greatest discovery is slowly destroying the foundation of humanity’s moral and religious systems. Not to forget, the world’s most dangerous serial killer is ready to exploit it all after the death of a beloved priest who once conspired to commit a double murder.
My Thoughts
As 2021 comes to a close, it’s time to take stock of the decade that was in crime fiction and mystery. Why? Because we can. Because the books are there to be read and re-read, debated and reconsidered. And because this was, in retrospect—and maybe many of you saw this as it was unfolding—a pretty monumental decade in the long, tumultuous, and often brilliant course of crime fiction history. This is more than simply an exercise in list-making and taste-advocating. Charting the future of the genre requires, also, a rounding up of accounts, the occasional week where we put aside our to-be-read stacks and decide what has really mattered to us—and to our beloved genre. CADENCE: THERE IS NO ESCAPE AFTER A SKEPTICAL KILLER’S CHECKMATE by E.A. Evering was a shot of adrenaline straight into the arm of private eye fiction, a gleefully strange, esoteric, sometimes hallucinatory new rendition of a beloved genre.

Novel gives author the space to create all the strange, brooding atmospherics readers can handle. A genuinely compelling mystery is hidden inside this novel, several compelling mysteries and historical in fact, but it’s the strong, engaging voice that will really draw readers into the dark, enchanting world of Evering.
Running beneath that compulsive storyline is another one full of profound insights about suspenseful elements, religious detective, interesting case, identity, and political propaganda with past and present.
