Synopsis
Dear Mom is a real story of a woman who was struggling with schizophrenia after her marriage. The story represents the ups and downs of her life. Just because she wasn’t taking medicines, she had to go through a lot. Finally, she met an uninvited situation – a brain haemorrhage.
The author realized that he has to say many things to his mom before anything worse happened to her, and especially a word, ‘sorry.’ Sorry for the trouble he had given his mom without understanding her disease. Sorry for not supporting his mom when she actually needed support.
The story starts from admitting his mom to the hospital. The author waits for his mom to be conscious and talk to her as much as he could. Her journey of 21 days in the hospital makes him realize how important she was to him.
My Thoughts
I purchased this book for my 25 year old friend who is still suffering from the effects of growing up with a Schizophrenic mother. This book echoed so many of her experiences that it blew her away, it was a complete revelation to discover that other people have experienced the exact same things. In many ways it reassured her that what she felt at the time was entirely normal, and that the long-term effects are also very common and can be helped. This book has been an important part of her recovering, along with her counselling, and I can't thank the authors enough because it has truly helped her.
Book talks about one son's perspective of searching for her mom, loving her and dealing with her schizophrenic illness. It also touches upon her childhood up bringing and how he treated her mom as she became dependent and mentally ill. It gives a positive understanding of loving your mother with schizophrenia and how she can comprehend her love for her son. Truly mesmerising, emotional and validating. I would recommend it to professionals too..read this and get some understanding of how it is for the children of those with this serious mental health condition.
Every page holds something that I relate to. I recommend to all those that have been through this, You are not alone. Professionals, you could learn a lot.
Highly Recommended!
