Synopsis
Roberto Duran, intrepid Houston attorney, is called in to help clear the name of a young Mexican socialite who is caught at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport with cocaine in the lining of his luggage. As the grandson of Don Jose, owner of Bancomer, he swears the drugs are not his. Don Jose believes him and hires Roberto Duran. Together with the help of private investigator Luis Gil, Roberto delves into the world of the Mexican cartels to find the evidence he needs to clear his client, but will Roberto survive and arrive in time to put his case on at court?
My Thoughts
A brutal but well-written novel. Ramon Del Villar presents a gritty, believable tale about the "World of the Mexican cartels". This tale is elevated as well by Ramon Del Villar's cast of evocative characters ... Author Ramon Del Villar has been thorough in his research, both for historical and plotting-strategy purposes ... Ramon Del Villar has written a maelstrom of a fictional drug cartel and historical book, eternally complicated, filled with killers and drug cartels. He’s telling you everything you did and didn’t want to know about what went on and still goes on through his amazing storytelling. Great novels come in different guises. Some aren’t that easy to get through but are ultimately rewarding. Others grab you in a headlock – forcing you to read them wherever one goes: bus stop, at dinner, on the throne – and never let go until you’ve finished the blighter. Subsequently, one pines for the tome like a mutt whose owner’s gone away.
One such book is Payback by Ramon Del Villar.
Ramon Del Villar explains the machinations of the drug trade and how disparate organisations, such as the cartels, the agents and the mafia, co-operate to achieve their aims while weaving an intensely absorbing, compelling and intriguing narrative between his protagonists. Payback comprises 240 pages that I digested in less than two days. Like a dog with a bone, I could not put it down.
I don’t quite know where to begin with this review. The novel is so in-depth and detailed about the cartel lifestyle and Mexican drug cartel systems that enabled it. It is incredibly hard to breakdown. The characterisation is brilliant, the author slowly builds the characters up as the plot unravels.
