Synopsis
Ghoul War veteran Zane Vrexon is struggling to make ends meet as a private detective when he gets a cryptic note from an old friend, Dennis, who says his wife is in danger. Then Dennis turns up dead in his own potion shop and his widow, Vana, is the main suspect.
Zane has enough problems - including an addiction to healing elixir and a voice in his head with nothing but bad ideas - but he agrees to investigate with help from Dennis's gnome assistant and a professor from The Institute. But as they dig into the mysterious death, Zane and company discover Dennis had ties to the goblin mob. Meanwhile, Vana is being hunted by a being thought either mythical or long extinct.
And now they're all in the crosshairs with her.
My Thoughts
Wow! Reading this book was like running a marathon through an obstacle course over a mine field lined with snipers. Not for the faint of heart. The action never stopped even for the reader to take a breath. The story came together the way a complex recipe comes together and forms an incomparable concoction. There was nonstop killing, blood, and gore, but the whole premise of the story was a brilliantly executed plot. I didn't see the ending in advance. This is a great book!
It was generally fast paced! But that can be hard in a first book while setting the scene, and developing your characters! The plot was good, sub plots were just as good. There was enough violence to keep me on the edge, but not enough to make me sick. It was pretty close to perfect. And he did a smart thing with getting us interested in a lead character. Best I liked the charactors, they were real people, partly good and partly bad ,some more good than bad and others the opposite, but all fully developed which to me makes the story beleivable.
I must say its really convoluted tale with twists and turns every page. Once the author got all the story lines started, he did a great job of weaving them to a coherent story that, in the end, made sense and was enjoyable reading.
