Every year the rankings come out, every year Finland tops them, and every year the rest of the world asks the same baffled question: how? Viivi Avellan has clearly been asked this so many times — over coffee, in boardrooms, on flights she probably just wanted to sleep through — that she finally sat down and wrote the answer. And thank god she did, because this book is an absolute delight.
Let's address the elephant in the room first, because Avellan does it better than I could: Finns are not walking around beaming. She describes them, quite affectionately, as looking like they've just lost a court case while waiting for the bus — and somehow that one image tells you everything you need to know about the gap between how Finland feels and what the world assumes happiness is supposed to look like. This book lives entirely in that gap, and it is fascinating territory.
Across 37 short, sharp, witty chapters — each one paired with a minimalist illustration that adds real charm without ever feeling like filler — Avellan unpacks the quiet, unglamorous habits and institutions that actually build a happy life. Not a performed one. An actual one. Why a Finn will leave their wallet on a café table without a second thought. Why summer cabins with no running water are treated as sacred rather than a hardship. Why the sauna isn't a luxury but a ritual. Why libraries function as genuine community living rooms, not just buildings full of books. Why children are trusted with independence far earlier than most cultures would dare. Why a walk in the forest is considered a legitimate substitute for a meeting that isn't going anywhere. Each of these, on their own, sounds like a quirky cultural footnote — together, they start to look suspiciously like a blueprint.
What I appreciated most is what this book refuses to be. It's not a glossy travel guide selling you a fantasy. It's not an academic paper drowning the charm in citations. And Avellan is upfront that Finland isn't perfect — she's not writing propaganda. What she's written instead is something far more useful: a funny, honest, deeply human look at a country that never set out to win a happiness contest and just quietly, stubbornly built a life worth living anyway.
By the end, you're not just entertained — you're genuinely reflecting on your own life, wondering which of your daily habits are working against you and which small, unglamorous Finnish idea you could actually steal. That's the real trick of this book: it makes you smile more than the people it's written about, while teaching you exactly why they don't need to.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Smart, funny, and quietly profound. A must-read for anyone who's ever wondered why Finland keeps winning — and what the rest of us might be getting wrong.
About the author
Viivi Avellan is a Finnish author, entrepreneur, and former TV journalist who has spent more than 15 years living outside Finland — which has given her plenty of opportunities to explain Finnish people, Finnish habits, and why Finns apparently do things a little differently.
She writes books whenever life gives her some free time, which usually means vacations. Some people relax. Viivi apparently starts another book.
She is currently working on her PLEASE EXPLAIN? BOOKS series, a humorous look at the wonderfully strange things Finland somehow gets right — beginning with Finland: The Happiest Country in the World. PLEASE EXPLAIN?
She is also the creator of the playful Goes Bananas Books series.
When she isn’t working, writing, or explaining Finland to confused foreigners, she is probably wondering why her vacations keep turning into publishing projects.
