Synopsis
This is the frightfully relatable but ever so raw memoir of a woman's struggle with early motherhood, all whilst battling the demons of mental illness in the midst of keeping her marriage together. The story tells of a mother's fight to keep her family afloat, her sex life alive and her sanity intact, even though the person she once was is no longer to be found.
It's a very honest book on motherhood that you will find hard to put down. Ride the emotional train along with the author as she tackles the daily grind of motherhood, wife life and the suffocating grip of anxiety head on.
My Thoughts
I’m not a mom, but I often ponder motherhood (I’m at the age when an influx of friends begin to get married and have children) and how miraculous, difficult, and nonetheless worthwhile it must be. Most of the mothers in my life echo this sentiment. They assure me that while raising children isn’t easy, it can be incredibly gratifying. Not every mother shares this experience, though. Motherhood is complex, and for some moms, it’s exceptionally difficult. The truth is, there’s no right way to be a mother, and every mom’s experience is varied and valid. Sharing those unique experiences is one of the best ways to educate people — including other mothers — about how motherhood differs based on factors like culture and class. Luckily, many moms are doing just that; they’re writing books about the various faces of motherhood.
The 3 M's: Motherhood, Marriage & Mental Health by Penni Fagan showcases motherhood from different perspectives. There’s the mother who uproots her entire life and battling the demons of mental illness in the midst of keeping her marriage together, for the benefit of her children.
This is the book I wish had been available during my pregnancy and my baby’s first weeks of life. Penni Fagan’ voice is reassuring and relatable, and her curiosity is infectious, and her writing is very deep right from her heart is just what people in the trenches of early parenthood need. An empowering resource…Penni Fagan shares her own life experiences through this heart wrenching and inspiring memoir, well-substantiated information about women’s physical and mental health, aiming to help readers reduce their anxiety and make truly informed choices.
This is a powerful memoir about motherhood and is must-reads for everyone looking to better understand the challenges and triumphs of being a parent and a better human being.
