Synopsis
Rooster, a handsome Golden Retriever who loves belly rubs and bacon, and Squid, a mangy grey cat who loves big naps and butt scratches, are an unlikely duo. Even though their early days were spent scrounging for food and seeking shelter, they knew they were meant for more. As luck would have it, they were rescued by the town veterinarian and welcomed into the best family ever.

Life with their new family is never boring. In Bowling Burglar, a family picnic in the backyard is interrupted by breaking glass and a scream from next door. As the mystery unfolds, Rooster and Squid are smack dab in the middle of the chaos.

Since they spend half their time at the animal hospital, Rooster and Squid also pass along important pet tips about bee stings, zinc toxicity, eyesight in dogs and cats, lizard tails, obesity, and little-known facts about lobsters and frogs.

Join Rooster and Squid on their first of many adventures together in this delightful series.

My Thoughts

Rooster and Squid: Bowling Burglar is a charming and delightful read that combines a heartwarming pet story with a dash of mystery. Jen Cole introduces us to an unusual but endearing duo—a Golden Retriever named Rooster and a scrappy cat named Squid—who navigate their way through life after being rescued and finding a loving home.

The story is packed with light-hearted humor and engaging moments that bring out the unique personalities of both pets. Rooster, with his love for belly rubs and bacon, is the optimistic and protective one, while Squid, who prefers long naps and butt scratches, adds a sly and quirky edge. Their friendship, though unlikely, is the heart of the book, as they find themselves in the middle of a neighborhood mystery involving broken glass, a scream, and some backyard chaos.

What sets this book apart is its blend of adventure and educational tidbits. As Rooster and Squid navigate their world, readers get sprinkled with useful pet care information, such as tips on handling bee stings, recognizing zinc toxicity, and understanding the quirks of animal health, including eyesight in pets and even fun facts about lobsters and frogs.

Jen Cole’s writing is accessible and fun, making it perfect for younger readers or anyone looking for a light, feel-good read. It’s clear that the story is just the beginning of a series, and fans of animal adventures will likely be eager to follow Rooster and Squid on more escapades.

*Rooster and Squid: Bowling Burglar* is a delightful start to a promising series, blending the cuteness of pets with a small-town mystery. Whether you love animals, enjoy lighthearted stories, or simply want to learn a few pet facts along the way, this book is sure to entertain.
